Prompts for captions people will actually read

Captioning is easy to get wrong — here's how to ask for it right.

  • "Add captions, two words at a time, uppercase, punchy."
  • "Add captions after the cut is final, not before." (captions are re-timed to the cut audio — order matters)
  • "This clip has no speech, just music — skip captions on it."
  • "Make the captions bigger and more readable on mobile."

One rule of thumb: always cut first, caption last. Captions are generated from the final cut audio, so re-transcribing after every trim keeps them perfectly in sync — asking for captions too early just means redoing them later.
